Photography Excursion

Our photography excursions take us to varied locations with a theme for each month's photographic subject. Members take their photos on anything from a smart phone to a Digital SLR camera. We also take a group photo at each location as a memento of our visit. Following the excursion a collage is created from each member's favourite shot of the day. It is always amazing how in the same location we all see things through a different lens and perspective and come up with some amazingly different photos. More importantly, we also have a lovely morning out and enjoy the laughs and sharing of knowledge while socialising with other group members.

The focus on this collection is not so much the technical perfection, but the interest, beauty or colour and frame of the photo.

Below are some examples of photos taken on excursions by group members.  Click on an image to see a larger version.

This photo reflects one of my photographic pleasures of capturing perspective views.

I like the context and the framing of this photo.

‘Solitude in the City’

'Stairway to Heaven' (with apologies to Led Zeppelin!). I liked the curving path heading towards the unknown, covered by interesting shadows and light.

This photo was a test of patience waiting for an edgy lion to finally settle and relax. With his tongue slightly out, it looks like  butter wouldn’t melt in his mouth.

Flight of the pollen laden bee. How much more pollen can a bee bear!

Although I have been to Heide on innumerable occasions, this is the first time I had sighted this artwork. With trees nearby and power lines in close proximity, I positioned myself so that I intentionally appear to have the bird of prey’s claws clinging to a power line.

The inspiration was the sunlight through the spray mist creating an eerie effect. The original image also had the sprinkler hose in the foreground which I felt tainted the image. The hose was 'removed' with the help of AI in a photo editor.

Our visit to the enigmatic Guilfoyle's Volcano with its remarkable cactus collection gave us a wealth of possible subjects. This close-up of cactus spines was a fun technical exercise in composition and focus.

The Melbourne CBD is a cornucopia of photographic subjects, from the thronging of people in the streets, to the extraordinary 19th and 20th century architecture. This photo captures a strangely atmospheric view.

Who would have thought an excursion planned as an indoor photo file overview, would lead to an impromptu trip to La Trobe. In a burst of glorious winter sunshine I spotted this gang-gang cockatoo having a bite to eat.

The artists' colony at Montsalvat is remarkable for its architecture and its extensive grounds. It is still home to a thriving community of artists, and I was thrilled to be able to catch the moment of brush touching canvas as this artist was painting roses en plein air, much as the artists of the Heidelberg School would have done over a century ago.

I’ve always liked black and white photography, for many reasons. Firstly it accentuates the shape, outline and structure of the subject. It can create a sense of drama. Often it enables me to present a new perspective on what might be a mundane subject, as with this unsuspecting and perfectly innocent scarecrow who is transformed into a rather sinister creature, with a little help from the underarm angle of the shot.
